I love Patrik Elias he is one of my role-models..i think its awesome how last year he came back after recovery from hepatytis and got 5 points..but he isnt shining so brightly this year. I think the captain should be gionta, gomez, or hey even Parise..he's doing good too.

The whole New Jersey Devils team loves Patrick Elias. He earned the captaincy. However, you are right. He is quiet and likes to show instead of pump up. Elias just does his thing and sees what comes of it. In my opinion, no one else would make a better captain, except for two people. One player is John Madden. He has skill and strength that can motivate his team to greatness. He can give that big check, pick off the puck, score the goal, or even kill any opposing plays. He has definately earned a chance at captaincy with his motivational plays and awesome skill. The other player is, and I think he should be the real captain, is Brian Rafalski. With a defensive team, I think the Devils should have a defensive captain. Rafalski is the most experienced defenseman in the team and is basically the leader of the New Jersey defense. Rafalski has great stats for a defenseman, but you should look at what he does defensively. He is always the guy that blocks the pass away from a wide open player. The guy who gets to the puck first and begins a counter-attack. I hear the name Rafalski every single play. He is not a hard-hitter, but he reminds me of a Scott Niedermayer, and he is captain of an awesome team. Brian Rafalski has the leadership and experience to take over as captain of the NEw Jersey Devils. But I don't mind Elias being the captain. He has been with the team for what? 10-14 years in the organization? Yeah he earned it with his loyalty and better to not change anything if it's going New Jersey's way right? However, when that oppurtunity arrives, Rafalski should be the "first mate". He should be the next guy in line as captain. Followed by Madden and then a good list of players like Gomez, Pandolfo, Brylin, and, if only it were possible, Marty himself hehe. But once again, Brian Rafalski, is the best choice for captain.

first of all, there's no way parise is going to be captain. not with all the veterans on the team. a captain is someone who can provide a leadership role on and off the ice. one of the reasons elias was named captain was because jersey lost stevens and niedermayer. if goalies can be captain, i'm sure there'll be no doubt marty brodeur would be captain. he's a guy that has a voice in the dressing room and players look to him on the ice.

I just don't get why Marty Brodeur can't be named captain. I wouldn't give it to Gomez, he may not even be with them next season. Patrik Elias is still the best choice, followed by John Madden (and he's the alternate anyway).

"Captains" in my mind are the leaders of the team in terms of emotion - not necessarily point production. Great examples of what I mean around the league are Jason Smith in Edmonton, Scott Mellanby in Atlanta, and Adrian Aucoin in Chicago. In my mind, New Jersey would benefit from giving the "C" to their defensive wonder, John Madden. I admit I am not a die-hard Devils fan, but I follow hockey enough that I think he is most deserving.

If they want to win the Stanly Cup, historically speaking they should have someone like Jamie Langennbrunner be their captain because no team has ever won the Stanley Cup with a European as their captain.
