because they dont know how to play it............mind you its like the Brits trying to play American football............we just dont cut it very well other than when we have some of their players over there to help us out.

Actually I am proud of the USA even though they sucked so bad, but they accomplished 1 thing that no other team did in the world cup.......................NOT LOSE TO ITALY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That makes me laugh and it shows that USA can play against good and strong teams, but the problem is, is that USA isn't getting challenges, I mean yeah they play against Mexico but thats REALLY boring and its not much of a challenge, they need to have more test games against teams like Italy, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay just incase.
And to answer you're main question, USA sucked in the world cup cuz well, they lost concetration. I don't think they even HAD concentration, only in the Italian game. I don't know about Donovan. And maybe the USA coach didn't give them Spirit. Football is also about philosophy! If you're screams at you "WERE GONNA WIN WETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!" isn't what I mean....
They sucked because they didn't have good philosophy, concentration, and a little Defence problems.

This ties into the other answers saying that US Football and the other sports are bigger, so we don't have as many options to choose from for our national team. Also, the "big names in soccer" here aren't necessarily big names across the pond. But we're trying to spread the news that soccer is actually one of the toughest sports. Can you run 45 minutes non-stop, take a 15 min break and do it again, whilst being kicked and elbowed and possibly kicked in the mouth?

I disagree with the other answers....the USA has talent enough to compete with the rest of the world. Bruce Arena's coaching, game planning and strategy were to blame. Conservative, pack the defense, and hope for a counter attack wasn't the way to go at all. We have some greyhounds on the team---why wouldn't he let them run?

To compete on the world stages, you simply need players with a world experience.
Stamina US is not bad and that's the reason why they can pick up any sport and be half decent at it.
Tactic wise they are not up there. They cannot be expected to change tactics once the opponent starting to get physical at them and deny them the ball to play a passing game.
In conclusion, there simply are not enough US players who play
overseas.

because the USA blows at soccer, they suck bottom line...they're too worried about putting all their time in baseball and basketball which were supposed to be the best ever...but oh wait...didnt we lose both of those world championships?...forget the other crappy sports, worry about the worlds sport football (soccer for u Americans)

There isn't enough pressure on the team and athletes to do better. The media isn't interested, so therefore the people aren't interested. And if the people aren't interested then who's going to be putting pressure on the team? It's such a double edge sword...

USA doesn't really play soccer. They are basically the kings of American Football, basketball, and others too. Plus I think that their teamwork is a little bit disorganized.

Because all the best athletes from the US play other sports. And Donovan tore his ACL months ago.

American football, basketball, and baseball/softball are bigger sports than football/soccer in the USA. I think it's funny how the USA tied with Italy, the champions.
