I'm Portuguese and let me tell you, Portuguese is more chaotic than English. I also speak some Spanish, Greek, German and a lot of French and I can assure you that every language is complicated. Try Finnish - 11 declinations (if that's how you say it in English)! English is a widespread language because it's so simplified... Laearning English, for a foreigner, any foreigner, is far easier than learning any other language I can think of. I could be wrong, naturally... But I tend to disagree, even when you think of it as more than your basic English.

Learning to SPEAK conversational (everyday) English is similar to learning most other languages. The real issue with English is learning to READ and WRITE it because certain letters or combinations thereof are not pronounced the same way all the time. However, in Spanish, for instance, letters and combinations of letters are always pronounced the same way which greatly simplifies reading and writing the language. One must still memorize vocabulary in any language..

Yup! English is made of several languages, actually, which accounts for contradictory spelling and grammar rules. Have fun.
