i always use the rule that if the fry can fit in the bigger fish's mouthg it probably will. once they are big enough to not become a meal in one gulp it should be safe. with mine it took a few months

If you have a heavily planted tank? You can just leave the little buggers in there. =)

Otherwise? I'd suggest about 1/2"-3/4".

Big enough that they can't fit into the adults' mouths and be dinner or a snack.

when their parents are big about a month. if they can fit in their parents mouth don't place them they may get gobbled up...=(
