First of all your tank should consist of any number of substrates from gravel based selections. I recommend at least several inches of gravel as the Oscar is a digger and will surely make himself a few holes to rest in.

Lets cover decoration issues now. Many owners report their Oscars literally rearrange the aquarium to their likings and against the hobbyists best attempts, the Oscar seems to keep things the way HE likes it. This couldnt be more true! Oscars are amazingly stubborn fish that will or wont accept certain decorations. Namely, plants in specific seem to be a readily destroyed target on the Oscars list, which is why I recommend using plastic plants at first.

If the Oscar is going to uproot or toy with plastic plants, you can simply remove them. However, if the opposite is so, and the Oscar is taking to the plastic plants you now have the option of confidently adding real plants if this so suits your taste. However again, this is always an at your own risk action as I have personally raised Oscars that have lived peacefully with heavily planted tanks for years only to destroy entire sections of the tank to suit him better.

In short, decoration for Oscars should consist of mostly large rocks and/or bog woods.

I recommend clustering decorations for a more natural look. Keeping to the fact that Oscars take to all sections of the tank so open water is really what is most important here.

Oscars seem to get a big perverse glee out of rearranging the tank on a continual basis, that's just the way they are.

Acting mad? Could be that it's two males fighting over territory. That's the most likely answer. In that case given a large tank they will eventually draw a line down the middle somewhere with the stronger fish on the larger side. f the tank is too small the dominate fish will kill the other.

Oscars will enjoy toys in their aquarium. They love moving stuff around.

They are. Oscars will kill each other. They also need to be in a large tank, about 25 gallons for one. If you have two, the stronger one WILL kill the weaker one. If you have three, the weaker two WILL kill the stronger one, then the strongest survivor will kill the weaker one.
Doesn't matter how big the tank is. Mature Oscars are highly aggressive to their own kind.
