For the summer games, I would have to give the nod to either Jesse Owens in the '36 games or to Mark Spitz in the '72 games for his 7 gold medals. The winter games, whenever I thnk about them I always see Franz Klammer in the downhill and the '80 US hockey team. In my opinion the most infamous person or persons of the Olympics weren't even atheletes, they were the terrorists of the '72 Munich games.

My 2 most famous would be Jesse Owens, for winning 4 Olympic Gold medals at Hitler's Games, showing up Hitler and utterly shattering the theory that white men were a superior race. And Bob Beamon, for his phenomenal 8.90m long jump at the 1968 Games in Mexico City.

The most infamous is easily Ben Johnson. Busted for Annabolic Steroids, he had his Gold medal (and the World Records) taken from him, and was banned from the sport for 2 years. It is something that, in my opinion, that the sport is still trying to shake off and recover from. Second to Johnson would be Italian runner Dorando Pietri, who lost the Gold medal he won in the Marathon of the 1908 Olympics because he received assistance from some of the race marshalls. Although he lost his medal and was omitted from the race placings, he became a celebrity afterwards.

The most Famous is Jesse Owens then Carl Lewis, Most infamous is Ben Johnson, not because he used steroids, but because he got caught using steroids.

What about Lasse Viren who tripped in the last mile of the 10,000m run in the 1972 Munich Olympics... fell to about 50 meters behind the field.. got back up... and ran his last half mile in 1:56.22 to win in a world record time of 27:35.

Jesse Owens is probably the one that would be on everyone's list, since he went in to Nazi-Germany and showed up Hitler. Then there is Ben Johnson, who was stripped of his medal after testing positive for steroids.

Jesse Owens is the most famous. Tanya Harding is easily the most infamous (cheating with 'roids is one thing, eliminating your competition...).

Ditto on Jesse Owens. A case could also be made for Roy Jones Jr., who was robbed of boxing gold on an obviously fixed decision.
