Fish DON'T need one gallon per inch. Bad myth that just won't die. It really depends on what kind of fish, some need more, some less.

Mollies are not a schooling fish and will do well in groups or alone.

I wouldn't keep mollies in a 2.5 gallon, they do need more space than that. a 10 gallon would be good for 4-6 adult mollies and a pair could do fine in a 5 gallon, but I wouldn't get any smaller than that.

Mollies can grow up to 6 inches long and when they reach this adult size, require a tank size of around 30 gallons per fish. For small juveniles, you can have a small tank, but doing so will require buying up and up as the fish grows larger, so if you have to buy a tank in the first place, it's just as easy to get the full size tank in the beginning. This way, you can be sure that their growth will never be stunted. For a pair, you could probably do a 40-50 gallon tank. Mollies also prefer brackish water and, as algae is an important part of their diet, a heavily-planted, algae-laden tank.

A good base rule is 1 gallon per inch of fish. It IS a -base- rule, though. Goldfish, for example, need at LEAST 20 gallons for a 4" fish...and that's with 50% water changes once a week.

You could put 1 molly and a few shrimp in a 2.5 gallon. I'd suggest a male, just in case. =) You can still have a little aquatic friend. Just be careful and be certain of your water params and such. Feel free to im me if you want.

Fish need 1 gallon of water per 1" in size.
If you're not sure how big your fish will get, go to your local pet store and see the charts, or just type in silver mollies for a website.

Mollies need to be in a school of 4 or more. The stress will kill them. 4 mollies would be thrilled in a 10 gallon tank. Five would be crowded.

Figure on about an inch of fish per gallon. 2.5 is a bit cramped even for two.

I would get at least a 10 gallon tank, one inch of fish per gallon, so if your fish is one inch big, that's one gallon required.
