You could, of course, read The Voyage of the Beagle and On the Origin of Species fo find out.

The Galapagos finches were obviously all related but they had adapted to fill different ecological niches, collecting different food from different areas. They showed that species were not immutable - which was the general opinion of the time. If some species were not immutable then perhaps none were immutable. If species can change over time then one form can evolve into another. This is what evolution is - change in organisms over time.

Darwin was not the first to think of evolution or to find evidence for it. His work was a synthesis of what had gone before but he took it the crucial step further with natural selection. There have been some modifications to Darwinian theory over the last 150 years but his main thesis still holds good supported by all the evidence.

Evolution today is one of the strongest scientific theories there is. It has been demonstrated in laboratories; it has made predictions which have ben found to be correct; all the evidence that is found supports it. It is a more robust theory than either theory of gravity, than the theory of electricity or germ theory.

Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, cosmology - you name it - all sciences support evolution and to deny evolution is to deny science. The vast majority of Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews etc around the world accept the fact of evolution and it does not conflict with their religion. It is only the fundamentalists of the various religions who deny science because they have such a narrow view of the world.
