After the Civil War, northern railroads were stretching across the country, so farmers could easily transport their cattle meat across the country. Most meat-packing industries were centrally located in Chicago, so they could ship to anywhere in the country.

Most farmers came from the war torn South, so they faced many hardships. One was their lack of railroads. During the Civil War, soldiers would destroy Southern railroads.
