Civil Union is a "marriage" before the justice of the peace (i.e. a judge, sherriff, mayor).
A common law marriage is basically like a civil union in which 2 individuals live together in the same household for a period of 5-7 years (varies by State statutes). In which after that time, the 2 are considered married.
A marriage is a civil bond which was oversaw by a priest, pastor, bishop, or any type of religious leader. It is basically the same as a civil union in which the same laws and guidelines must be met but is done by a religous leader instead of a justice of the peace.

Basically, it's the same thing, a civil union is a marriage until you get ridiculous. It's just that some religious biggots out there want to keep the word marriage all to the heterosexuals. They are ignorant and cannot accept that homosexuals can have the same love for their husbands/wives that they do in their heterosexual relationship. It's basically a rhetorical jab at gay marriage. While these people may say a marriage can only be done in a church, for them, a marriage can also be done in a course house, if you're not gay!

A civil union doesn't require a priest/pastor, but a marriage does. Also, a CU is a lot easier to dissolve, and takes less time.
