I first learned on an acoustic. The strings are rough so you can build up calluses better/faster. I would just grab a cheap guitar at first.

HE IS INTO ROCK! That generally means electric (but I know there are many great acoustic rock songs). An electric has a thinner neck, and lighter strings, less pain on the wrists while you build muscle. DO NOT just buy a cheap guitar. Go to the shop and play around for a while. 'Brownsville' makes good cheap electrics, and SamAsh (if there is one near you) has a nice house brand 'Guitar Research'. If you choose electric, you will also need an amp. Fender has "starter packs" with a guitar, tuner, strings, cables, and amp. If you want to pick your own gear, Fender makes many very good solid-state amps (think transistors and microchips) like the new Frontman 15, or Princeton DSP. If you have the cash (mostly $500+) you can get a tube amp with that warm vintage tone. For acoustic, you don't need any amps or 'peripherals' (musicians call them 'necessities'). Sigma, made by the renowned Martin company are quite good, as are Ovations. Feel free to email me for any more info.

Buy a used guitar to see if you like it and can learn how to play. My first guitar was $50.00

electric is easier to learn on because the neck isn't quite as thick, making it easier to reach the frets.
