How many other famous signs can you think of? What other signs have gotten as much screen time? That's a reason why the Hollywood sign historically has most likely been *the* most littered and vandalized sign. It's highly visible, gets lots of attention, and it's white, which is good for vandalizing. As for the litter, it's also in a place with a great view, so people who go to look at it and bum around there are likely to leave their litter, like they do everywhere.

However, now they have implemented vandalism protection around the letters. Also, they aren't made of wood, but Australian steel. The wooden letters were replaced with these in 1978 with the help of many Hollywood donors like Gene Autry, Hugh Hefner, and Alice Cooper. They were just refurbished again in 2005.

Probably because it is always being looked at so their vandalism will be viewed by many people. It probably also has a lot to do with hatred and jealousy of people in Hollywood.
