is there a simple definition as to what it is?

The square of the wave function when integrated over the entire area that the wave functions occupies must equal 1. So the oringinal wave function must be multiplied by some constant to make this condition true.
Physically, this means that the probability that the particle is somewhere must be 1.

Basically a wave function has to be normalized to descibe a real particle. The probability that the particle will occupy a space must equal 1, which basically means it has a 100% chance to exist.
