America isn't ready to effectively deal with the issue of race itself. We are the only country in the world that has "race" on all applications or all sorts. We are also the only heterogeneous country in the world. Every other country is homogeneous and has one particular type of race (Germans in Germany, Japanese in Japan, and so on). We are the ultimate mix of all races, which is why we have the word "race" on many of our documents. This I believe is mostly for demographic purposes.
If you look at blacks in today's high society consider the actual skin tone of the individual. Colin Powell is black but of light complexion. He was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of State and could have gotten to the White House if he wanted. Barak Obama is also of light complexion and may in fact have a chance at the Presidency. One major exception is Oprah who has mainstream America in her pocket. If she ran in any capacity of whatever office, she would win because of her popularity. Condi does well at her position and is darker then either Obama or Powell. Is she a token or the best person for the job? Overall, I think America will vote for a woman in the white house than have someone of color there. Every other major power in today's world has had or currently has a female as the country's premier leader. (Angela Merkel, Germany, Margret Thatcher, Great Britain, Indira Ghandi, India to name a few). Many Americans want someone who can do the job the got elected to do. By the people for the people. The average American doesn't care about politics. They just want to feed their family, put a roof over their heads and make an honest, decent living. When it comes to racial issues however, although we have progressed greatly since the middle passage times, there is still MUCH work to do and a LONG ways to go for every American. I honestly think that ONE day America will be ready for a black president but not right now. And by the way, I am a black American.

I really don't care whether the President is Black , White or purple with yellow stripes....but what I really think is that if this really wasn't an issue, we wouldn't be asking this question. It's terrible that this is 2007 and people are still questioning themselves whether a black person or a woman should be elected. And when I say that I don't mean to attack you, I'm just saying this is a general concern.

I agree with the first answer but definitely not Condi Rice! (I'm not sure what would make us NOT ready for a black president)

America is ready and waiting for a good president of any race, color, creed, gender, or sexual orientation. I don't care if she's green with purple stripes and gay as long as he or she can rebalance the budget and get us out of Iraq.

No, but I think they are ready for a man with reasonable intelligence that truly believes in what he is doing and not the dollars that will be made from it, that happens to be a person of color.

I think we're ready for it. I just don't think that most of the nation is confident that we are ready for it. And honestly I don't see much of anyone who is a viable candidate at all, regardless of race or gender. It's more like choosing the lesser of the evils.

Nope.
Voting will see to that no blacks to be elected. Unless you wipe out the entire white population in the US. (There is a bit of racism inside us all).
Anyway, the black population after years of oppression and stereotyping is seen as hip hop loving dudes always into drugs or crimes. Sure there are good guys too, but there are more black sheep then Mary can handle.
