You can also connect with an ethernet cable. You only need the adpater wif you want to connect wirelessly.
If your router is about 3 m away from your console, you can use the ethernet cable that came in the box to connect to live.
Otherwise you need to buy an ethernet cable of the fitting length. Make sure you *don't* buy a crossover ethernet cable.

No as long as you have a router you can use your ethernet cable to get online the wireless adapter just allows you to connect to a wireless router and play anywhere in your house with the 360 online

Like the name implies, you only need it if you want to have wireless access. Otherwise, you can use an ethernet cable and plug it from the router to the 360 or from your cable modem to your 360.
