I just bought a Dell XPS 410 with Intel Core 2 Duo and so far it's really great.
I'm running XP Pro and have a free upgrade to Vista on it's way. I'm not installing Vista until Microsoft comes out with it's first Service Pack which is in the works as we speak.
I think as long as you buy a reliable PC and get what you want in it, then most reputable PC's are fine.
We have many Dell's in the extended family. Desk tops and lap tops and all have served very well.
Just spend the extra bucks now to get what you want or you'll be constantly "upgrading" as the years go by.
Hope this helps.

Best pc is the one you build. Dell will screw you over and not answer your calls. Dell computers will get messed up after a week. My aunt got a Dell in the summer for my uncle who is a computer programmer. After 2 weeks of use it broke. So tell me is Dell still the best. Why are Dell so good? The answer is they are not the best and never will.

The best PC is a custom made one. One of the best you can buy is probably the Formula Red Dell XPS.
