Yes. Folic acid intake will decrease the chance of neural tube defects in the baby (ie. spina bifida). Most maternity vitamins contain an appropriate amount of folic acid (I believe it's 400mcg?)

Yes. Actually, if someone is planning to get pregnant they should take prenatal vitamins or folic acid tablet for 3-6 months prior to getting pregnant. It helps prevent certain Neural Tube disorders such as Spina Bifida. The spine is formed in the first couple of weeks of pregnancy, so starting to take the vitamins when they find out that they are pregnant won't help with that.

ALL mothers to be should take folic acid. It is necessary for the proper development of your baby's brain and neural system. Actually, women who are trying to conceive shoule begin taking the prenatal vitamins (it's in there) before even trying for awhile. It can't hurt you and is soooo good for the developing baby!

Yes. I was just in my gyno's office and I just happened to be bored in the room. So, I started reading some poster's he has up. He has up a poster that says to take 400 micromilligrams of follic acid a day when expecting to get pregnant. It helps to develop the baby's bones, cartilige, and to lower the risk of brain problems.
