AVG is the most popular, but an all in one solution is best.
I recommend scanning your computer for free with Xoftspy.

This program removes Adware, Spyware, Trojans, Worms, hijackers, toolbars, Keyloggers and many of the most prevalent and annoying viruses.

i would have to say McAfee anti virus is a very good product..you would have to pay for the service to get regular inoculations...but it is well worth it...i have their anti virus and firewall/security center programs and i am behind a router... so i consider my systems safe and have no trouble surfing "risky" sites while McAfee automatically stops and cleans all the nasties i run into.....i have had anti virus stop and auto clean a number of trojans and a virus or two....the firewall increases protection while it asks you if you would like to grant or deny programs internet access.....just a few bonus programs are site advisor, quick clean, shredder, visual trace...........prices vary
