At Guadalcanal, WWII, they had no docks for ships to unload at so they threw 55 gallon drums of avgas overboard and floated them ashore. That's how the Marine aviators got gas for their planes. If a steel drum of avgas will float you better believe an oak barrel of Rum will. Arrrgg matey, float me a brew.

Yes, because all the pirates drank all the rum and threw the barrel overboard.

I tend to think that if there is any air in the barrel, that yes it will float.

why? are you trapped on an island with only one other person, your favorite cd, one condiment, and 3 luxuries of your choice? hoping that barrel of rum will float toward you..?

Only if it isn't full. In fact, in the old days, a certain amount of air was purposely left in the barrels so in the event of a mishap they would do just that!
