Verizon and Cingular use different phones because they use different digital technologies. The phones are not compatible with each other. It's not just Cingular phones that come jam packed with bells in whistles, but many Verizon, Sprint, Alltel phones do as well because that's what's popular these days. Personally, I have an old Nokia 5190 that I still use on Cingular from time to time. It doesn't surf the web, it doesn't play MP3's or any of that fancy stuff but it does make calls and does so better than most phones out there today. I went and got it and the biggest battery I could find for it on eBay and after shipping and everything I spent about $12 on it and it works great. The battery lasts about a month on standby. You'll never see that with the tiny phones of today with the light up colour screens showing live TV and what not. Just look for old unlocked phones on eBay and you'll get a good deal on a simple perfectly good phone. Otherwise, look at Cingular's GoPhone offering. These phones are typically simpler in order to keep the price lower as they subsidize these phones much less than contract phones. You can still activate these phones on a contract although you may have to pay the GoPhone price and use up all the prepaid minutes it comes with first. Try and work out something with your dealer. The z300a is an example of a relatively simple Cingular phone typically marketed for GoPhone.
