Trisomy is a chromosomal anomaly that is characterized by the presence of an extra chromosome in the cells of a person's body. Under normal circumstances every human has 46 chromosomes in each cell of their body. A trisomy occurs when there are 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. There are three commonly known types of Trisomy - Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edward's Syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau's Syndrome).

There is prenatal screening available, but the results of such screenings have mixed reviews. If you are pregnant and considering the test, talk with your doctor to help decide what is best for you.

Other diagnoses are made through ultrasounds, or even shortly after birth.

I dont know what causes it, but I know they check for it around 2-4 months. My sister in law got a false positive on the trisomy 18 ( Edwards Synodrome) and we were all so scared. She went to a specialist and the baby is fine but It gave us a big scare. If you get the test and something seems out of whack, sometimes It can be false, but thats not always true. I would look at the webmd.com site, you may be able to do research there.

Nothing that anyone does causes trisomy - it's just a fluke when the chromosomes meet - sometimes causing an extra chromosome (3 instead of 2).
