There is both a Niagara Falls, New York, U.S. and a Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
The Niagara River connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Both Niagara Falls (cities) are located on this water, across from each other. New York contains a falls called Niagara Falls. Ontario contains a falls called Horseshoe Falls.
Grand Island separates Niagara River East from Niagara River West. Grand Island belongs to New York. The Niagara River first starts at Lake Erie (where Buffalo, New York is located), then flows northward to Lake Ontario (where Niagara on the River is located), passing by Grand Island, where the river splits in two briefly.
Niagara River travels only 28 miles from Buffalo, New York, to Niagara on the River, Ontario. Niagara on the River is not the same as Niagara Falls, which is much bigger. Of course, Buffalo is even bigger, and is the largest city in New York State.

Niagara Falls is actually 'between' the State of New York and Canada ... the actual 'boundary' runs down the 'middle of the river' that the falls are a part of.

Canada and New York.. There's more than one waterfall. The Horse shoe falls is located in Canada, the other water falls is located in NY. The best view of the both falls is from the Canadian side of the border!
