They became the Red Sox in late 1907. The name came from the first pro baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The name was shortened due to newspapers more winning to list SOX WIN! than STOCKINGS WIN!

They were originally known as the Pilgrims, and Im sure that some sportswriter called them the Red Stockings in the early days of the century. Also the original Boston Franchise in the National League were called the Red Stockings but had dropped the name

I think it has to do with the Yankees slamming the sox in the hoo hoo and the blood dripping from the taint to the sox. Bloody sox are red in color. Red sox.

The owners wanted to call them the Red Sux, but MLB thought it was too profane for families going to see them. So, they changed it to what it is today, even though they still suck.
