Actually, when Senator Thurmond ran on a segregation platform (1948) he had left the Democrat party for the Dixiecrat party.

He didn't join the Republican party until 1964. And he changed his segregation views (publically) in 1970.

WHY had he been a segregationist ?? He was from South Carolina !! Take a look at the history of that fine State from pre-revolution to the 1980's...

He ran on the Dixie-crat ticket in 1948. They were democrats who were upset that the democratic party weren't being more pro-segregation. Harry Truman had just desegregated the military. He would rejoin the democratic party and stayed a democrat until 1964.

Most see Thurmond's support of segregation as being more political than real personal conviction. Who knows what was in his heart, but many southern politicians supported segregation openly prior to african-americans were allowed to vote. It was a safe position to take in the 40's and 50's in the south.
