Here's a good one- "Maurice." A period drama based in post-Victorian England. It's based on a novel by E.M. Forster, a British Modernist. This movie ecapsulates the many facets of Modernism- especially the shame of being gay and the urge to transcend current homophobic conditions. Forster's own story is equally amusing- he lived an "out" gay lifestyle amongst the British elite- Virginia Woolf, Ford Maddox Ford, etc.. Maurice wasn't even published until after Forster's death- he feared it's reception. Superior intellectual quality. Good luck!!!!!

On the intellectual side, you might try Bent or Brokeback Mountain. Bent is a little known movie about two gay men who were imprisoned together in a nazi concentration camp. It isn't the biggest budgeted film, but important story line, nonetheless. Though cheesy, I am also a huge fan of Big Eden.

I don't know about intellectual movies or too many romance... but I loved Sommersturm (Summerstorm) but it's german... and then juste un peu de recomfort (A little comfort) although that was French =/ so those are romances, sorry I couldn't really help you with anything intellectual, but these may be a great place to start

I would really like to know, as well!
As far as lesbian movies are concerned, I really liked "Imagine Me and You", although it was more of just a romance.
Thanks for the good question...
PS-- I know pretty much any straight man will bash Brokeback Mountain, but I thought it was an absolutely AMAZING movie! Great acting, stunning landscapes and cinnematography... a must see.

please dont watch brokeback mountain. it is a very slow movie and it makes gay men from (that time period atleast) look bad, i think, because the two men are married to women and have children and sneaking off to be together. other than that its still a bad movie. I thought Kissing Julia Stein was entertaining

Try Total Eclipse with Leonardo DiCaprio, it's not too bad.
