I am looking for a laptop for my boyfriend that would be good for basiclly school work. Also it would be good if it had a decent amount of memory (for music mostly). I am not really looking for anything fancy just reliable and good for travelling. My boyfriend might be kind of rough with it so I am not sure. I have a toshiba laptop that I love but I am not sure it will work for him, what do you guys think?

You can do as some and check /shop ebay , but you are sorta taking a chance . usually can shop around some online personally i would recomend going to Best BUY , they usually have great prices and carry Brands such as Toshiba, Gateway, HP,Compaq etc.. I am a man and I Travel alot with mine I have had 2 Toshibas one crashed with in one , the 2nd started giving display problems but it works great at home on a desk, I have had best luck with gateway, can find good systems on diferent specials at best buy, cheaper than direct from the computers website, see at www.bestbuy.com I just bought a new gateway nice machine, 80gb hdrive 1gig memory amd processor for 749, on processors to save $ amd is a great choice, if you prefer intel there budget line is a celron which is a good stable processor not super fast but simple and stable, good luck if need any more help let me know.. On brands for traveling, personally I have had great luck with Gateway , others havent had no problems with HP, nor toshiba,My toshibas were really mistreated. any brand will be fine, the trick is a good carry case, to keep them nice and secure and cushioned... Good Luck...

Damn, what a girlfriend lol. If it is for him I would let him pick it out. Maybe just print a picture of a laptop and give him that as a present to surprise him and then tell him he can go pick 1 out up 2 a certain amount of $$. They are customizable to a large degree, even with color. So unless he isnt picky at all or has told u exactly what he wants....let him pick. But the previous poster was right....u get what u pay for. I would say for around 1100 you should be able to get a good laptop with all the necessary accessories. You can try refurbished ones or Ebay....Ive never used either of those, Ive always felt if ur gonna spend that much anyway whats another 2-3 hundred. Plus if he is spending all that $$ on school shouldnt he have a good laptop to do his school work on? Just a note, you can get a smaller built in hard drive and buy a cheap external hard drive and let him keep his music on the external one. Hope Ive helped and good luck!

The only thing I can say is "you get what you pay for" if you pay for a cheap laptop, most likely it isn't going to work very long or very good.
I would suggest going to a office depot or staples and looking at a few different ones and trying to navigate around them to see what you like.
Also, do NOT get a gateway. EVERYONE I've ever known that has gotten a gateway was sorry they did and that is about 13 people or so. I say go with a dell!!

http://www.dell.com - Dell - You can customize the laptop you want and get an immediate price quote. Their prices run pretty low.. I got my laptop for about $1200.

http://www.newegg.com - New Egg - They usually have the best prices on any electronics items you could possibly want. If you don't see a good enough price from Dell, I highly recommend you check these guys out! Plus, items usually ship within 3 - 5 business days.

You can buy him a $500 Toshiba or a $700 HP.
That will cover all his necessities.
Music.photos,school work, even watch movies.
Try to get one with an AMD processor it is as good as Intel but cheaper
