I just setup a shared printer with my laptop and desktop, but the desktop only prints when my laptop(the main pc connected to the printer) is connected. Is there any way for this to be changed? I don't want my laptop to have to be connected to the printer for the other pc to print!

You can get a wireless printer or a printer with an ethernet port that you can directly plug into your router's ethernet port.

If you want to stick with your current printer (I'm assuming its using USB and not the old parallel port), you need a print server or adapter. You have several options in the market today. Below are links that will hopefully provide a solution to your needs.

Here are your choices:
Physical connection.

Computer connect to another computer and one computer connect to the shared printer.

Printer connected physically to a Print Server
and computers either physicall or over a network to the print server.

Set up a network and computers/printers are on that network.

Get a wireless print server- it attaches to your printer where your computer is now and you print to the printer as a share, like now, but without a dedicated computer attached- they are reasonable now, available fro USB or paralell printers and work great!

All you have to do is to share your printer on your wireless network . . . And you have to make sure it is on; I mean turned on, where your printer is physically connected . . .

But you can do this if you have a $pare money for a print server . . .

You have to down load the wireless disc in your lap top and also in your tower that you are receiving from. Also down load the printer in your lap top and also in the tower you are receiving from.

Let me know if that works
