I have 6 discus. First the Snake Skin hid out in the bottom right corner behind some plants, now he is all over the tank, happy happy. Second, the Pigeon Blood, same thing - Staying at the back of the tank, different location, not eating and barely moving. Now he is back to normal, but the Blue Diamond has taken up the watch at the back of the tank. Each fish "under the influence" stays basically in the same trance for 2 to 3 weeks then comes out of it. Only one fish is "out" at a time. The rest of the group are happy, will eat out of my hand, kiss me good night, do the Macarania, give me high 5's and so fourth. I don't get it, they act like they are on their last fin, then suddenly they are back to normal? Suggestions anyone? I have a 115 gal tank set up Nov 2006, other fish in tank tetras, 4 clown loaches, 4 swordtails, and a pleco.

The only idea that comes to mind is that they are attempting to pair off and one after another are being bullied to the back of the tank. No disease or parasite would cause this behavior and for it to move from fish to fish bullying is the only thing that makes sence to me.

They are definitely not very happy about something or getting scared. If your discus is hiding, staying in a corner, easily frighten most likely they are not happy with its surroundings.

You need to find out the reasons and help them:
1. Positioning of aquarium. Vibrations caused by people opening and closing doors, walking up and down the stairs make the fish jumpy and slow to settle down. Put the fish tank in a light traffic area.

2. Fish does not like shadows. It will frighten them. Setup an overhead lighting on the aquarium. The fish will feel better. You can see them better but they cannot see you. All aquarium shops have lighting on their show tanks. The fish are not scared with all the people looking at them.

Add a little salt to the tank, or "stress-coat" liquid, it will help too.
