in a toolbar (google toolbar/yahoo toolbar etc) go to the toolbar settings and go through all the tabs and other options and look for a setting named something similar to "Show Search History", or "Save Search History".

For turning this feature off on Internet Explorer, i'd say go to the Internet Options window and select Content tab, click AutoComplete and uncheck "Forms" that way it won't suggest previous search terms in search boxes.

you can ONLY do this in IE 7. also, you can NOT do this at the library because they have the options for the browsers turned off... however if you are at home, and you have IE 7 then you go to tools, options, delete, delete files, delete forms.

Again, this ONLY works in Internet Explorer 7 and you have to have administration rights to the computer, which you would NOT have at a library.
