Well, to be a "sleeper" it needs two key elements: Lots of power, docile packaging. You definitely have the docile packaging, so all you need is power.

An 88 Chevy Nova I believe is just a Toyota Corolla(AE82), with different badges. I would swap a 4A-GE engine in it, if your Nova is not one of the rare versions that had it already. There are a lot of performance parts available for these motors as they have developed a sort of cult following due to the popularity of 'Initial D' manga comics (the 'hero' of which drives a 4A-GE powered AE86 Corolla.) I would try to find the 20-valve version as it put out around 160-165 hp in stock form.

Ok, this car is basically a Toyota Corolla under the skin. Probably comes with a 4A series motor under the hood. Check out some MR2 forums like this one:

http://www.mr2oc.com/

You'll see quite a few performance recipes there. The 4A series motor came in some performance versions, including the supercharged 4A-GZE and a 20 valve version of the 4A-GE that you can import from Japan.

My boss has a mid-'80s MR2 with a homemade turbo kit and a Megasquirt computer. That thing is pretty fast. You can apply the same sort of tricks to a Nova that you can on an MR2.

I think i would pick a different car to work on cause if you drive it every day you aint going to be able to do much. You sure it aint a 78 Nova i dont remember any 80s models. Anyways a good 4-Speed tranny and a 350 4-bolt main engine with a 4-11 to one ratio positrack rear end and and you might have to put wheelie bars on it. Get the head worked on also oversized valves stronger springs, eldenbroch intake, good 750cfm 4-barrel carb however the ole Quadra-Jet is hard to beat...might want to redo the whole frontend also before sitting all this in be a dam shame to have all this power and not be able to drive it

dig around for an old Vette big block, rebuild her yourself back to stock but really honed n tweaked. Few upgraded parts if you like.

the power of the big block compared to the weight of the Nova, you'll lift that nose some on take offs I am sure.

could always re-gear the pumpkin some to make her have more of a launching gear, for that "ha ha....I smoked that Civic w/ ease!".

Personally.....I just want the old Vette....like a 72-74, prior to CPU and catalytic. Just want to make it stock again w/ upgraded interior. Pull up to all these punk kids and show them what a true car and horsepower are all about. Not this VEERM VEERM exhausts on Hyundai's.

Or cheap version.....just have the block bored out to the max limits and upgrade the exhaust to like 2" so it breaths easier.
