We have tried peanut butter, and sunflower seeds with a touch of vanilla essence without any luck.
Any other suggestions that might work?

well, actualy you want to use chunky peanut butter. the trick is that you take one of the chunks and jam it into the little grove on the trigger. the mouse will just lick up the peanut butter , but will not be able to resist that last chunk. make sure it is in there good and tight, the mouse will eventualy try to force the chunk out.

Believe it or not an exterminator told us to use lemon candy on the trap. What i ended up doing was using peanut butter on the trap with a couple drips of lemon juice on it and the mouse that avoided the trap for a week was dead in an hour. The other, most important trick is to place the trap along a wall since mice don't have the best of eyesight and use their whiskers to help feel along walls when they travel.

Cotton ball with vanilla extract, peanut butter works also.Spearamint gum also works Mice are very sensitive to odors so if your trap was near any chemical type substances that could be your issue.try a different trap. Also its true, Mice don't see well and 50% of the time they are caught they just stumble onto the trap so place the trap against the wall with the trigger facing the wall. You may also consider prebaiting. Let them take the bait 2-3 times then set the trap. good luck.

in the winter months use a piece of cotton from a cotton ball with a drop of vanilla extract. in the winter mice are more opt to look for building material as opposed to food.

Peanut butter or macadamia nut is best in the warmer months.

As previously mentioned mice follow urine trails , Trap placement is the key to success, Make sure that the snap part is along their urine trail.

Do not move anything so yo can place a trap as the urine trail is already existent around said object.

Therefore, Mouse will still avoid area where object once was.

We once had an intelligent mouse in our house (like the one from that movie, but I forget the name of it)! No kidding! We put poison pellets in the closet where it was. Later, while cleaning up back there, we found that the entire box of pellets was empty. While cleaning, we picked up a coat that was on the floor and out from the coat pocket spilled all of the poison pellets!! The mouse had just relocated the pellets....to trick us, I guess, who knows. We couldn't believe what we were seeing! We then got one of those glue sheet traps and, almost as a joke, put a little piece of American cheese on it. Within minutes of turning out the lights for the night, we heard a commotion and, sure enough, we had the mouse. We safely released him outside. :)
