I love classic and modern literature, and I couldn't even get past the first few pages. It made my head hurt. Reading Ulysses was like listening to a drunk at a bar ramble on about himself-- I just wanted to punch the guy!
I really don't have a favorite 20th C novel-- I'll have to think about this a while. I'm more a 18th-19th C kinda girl, myself.

~I think it is the best interpretation of the Trojan war that I have ever read, particularly the discussion about the relationship between Hector and Achilles and their respective protective deities. An even better tome, though, is Peter Stampfel's "Marmatomonax and the Lunabumser", but unless you can read auf Deutsch, try the translation by Steve Webber. The book will be a classic, as good taste is timeless.

I disagree strongly. I'm not fond of stream-of-consciousness writing. There are too many good novels to choose the best.

It certainly is one of the best examples of modern writing. I can never pick a best.
