It is ok and even good to be different from what the magazines and your peers say is cool! It might make life more difficult in high school or whatever, but then when you're older you will be so much happier and secure with your life because you know who you are! People who just follow the crowds never figure out exactly who they are, what they are, what they believe, etc.
I'm almost 30 and amongst people in their late 20s, it is easy to tell who just followed the trends and crowds when they were younger. People who were really concerned about being popular, they are lost as adults. Very boring people and lives.
It is always good to be yourself and trust yourself. Always this is best!
Also, when you "are different" (which means you spend some time in your youth to find what you like), you develop your own personality and skills that will also help you with employers and dating later in life. It is all good.

That depends if being different means standing out or going against society.

Going against society will cause people to hate you because you would violate their beliefs in how a person should exist.

Merely standing out means taking what is already there and doing something different with it. Most are respected that take this route. They are the inventors and innovators that change society.

In our society it is bad to be different. I deffinately disagree but i think that if it was accepted less people would feel the need to rebel and be different. People steriotype people all the time, including me and probally you too. When you look or act different you don't get a positive responce from most people and that is not right. We are taught to be against what is different so it is hard to accept what is not considered normal.
