ive heard people say many times that like Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, and music in general from the 60s or 70s has better songwriting than todays music.

I'm not sure what exactly this means though??

I don't know much, if anything about music and songwriting except how to listen to it. so if you use a word musical vocabulary, please give a brief definition that i may be able to understand.

thank you

no one is answering, which makes me think this is a hard question and no one really knows what songwriting is. or its a loaded question and no one has time or patience to right it. sorry if this is the case

this is too much for the minds of most of these people, who never think about music, just put on the radio mindlessly

by 'todays' music, i am inferring that you are refering to the top 40s pop stuff. a lot of the oldies music people find todays music really pathetic. you cant argue with them if they are talking about what radio plays. but there really are a lot of mindblowingly amazing bands out there today (Tool, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Porcupine Tree)

stuff like S&G, and Beatles, they had really talented musicians. they broke rules, they were great lyrically and vocally too. mostly it was originality, and how they used it. also, they progressed as a band ( meaning you can hear the growth of the band from the first album to their last album they recorded.)

One thing I find about music of the 1960s as compared to today's music is that there were better tunes back then. Few songs today have tunes that you hum after one hearing. Compare them with Yesterday, by the Beatles; In My Room, by the Beach Boys, Satisfaction, by the Rolling Stones, People Are Strange, by the Doors; Sweet Baby James, by James Taylor; or Bridge Over Troubled Waters, by SImon and Garfunkel--just to name a few.

Its got to be a passion of yours and songs need to say something or tell a story, and everything has to mesh for it to be good.
