What I mean is... when did things like the Anna Nicole Smith saga, the Peterson trial, etc become front page, HEADLINE news? It seems like the media these days is just another corporation trying to sell their "product" by appealing to the lowest common denominator. I'm still fairly young (25) but I think the OJ Simpson trial had a lot to do with it. What do you guys think?

YenYenZ, boring is an opinion. I think the Anna Nicole Smith stuff is boring and not at all news-worthy. It just seems like this type of stuff used to be confined to the tabloids and maybe mentioned in the newspaper on the 2nd or 3rd page. Nowadays when I go to CNN I see "BREAKING NEWS: Anna Nicole Smith's mother wants custody of her body." It just seems like it's getting worse and worse and soon the media will have lost what little credibility it has left. Thanks for the response by the way.

I'd say just after Entertainment Tonight came about. When news about celebrities became as or more profitable on TV as regular news, then what really drove it down were the copiers like A Current Affair where they couldn't access celebrities so they made ones. I'm just talking TV though, but there have always been non-Hollywood celebrities

Actually a lot of the print and tv media has been "bought" by large corporations over the last 20 years--the media didn't sell out so much as get taken over. It's become a monopoly. I remember when every little town had it's own paper-not many of them exist now. I also remember when there use to be lots of independent bookstores and publishers-most of those are gone as well. Sometimes capitalism unchecked can become a very bad thing for society....

Uhhh the media sold out when it began. Notice how "boring" stories are never showed because then no one would watch meaning no money. The media has always been a corporation and corporations are always trying to sell their product, that it the whole point of it.

The media is a sales tool for the big corporation(s), which buy politicians regularly. It has not been officially admitted to, but anyone can read between the lines and see it.

You ask when did the media sell out and then you say you watch CNN for news. What would you expect to see? All the news services are trying to sell their product but if you want bias, you chose the right station.

Good question! When I was in journalism school, they drilled objectivity into us. That doesn't happen much anymore.
