Dark stain: A spot made from high heat, like a cigarette or a dark liquid, like coffee will need to sanded out. You can bleach as suggested but use a 50:50 water and white vinegar to neutralize the bleach in the wood before going to the next step. Bleaching may also cause a light spot or a dark spot depending on how you finish the area compared to the rest of the floor. Bleaching will raise the grain which increases the amount of stain it will accept. Sanding bleached wood take the natural look out of the wood also making it look fake. Also using steel wool with any water product on wood is a big no no unless you are using an oil based stain. Every little strand of steel that gets into the wood can leave a rust stain. Any time you sand a spot on a wood floor it will be the most likely place to get another stain because you create a low spot for dirt and liquids to sit in.

Dark stain: the color bark from Cabot or another manufacturer. You will need to strip the floor and sand.
