I filled up my Corsa on Friday night at Sainbury's, on the Saturday my car was juddery and didn't seem right- it was ABSOLUTELY fine before! In the end, the engine management light came on and the car stalled and wouldn't start up. This has resulted in calling out the RAC and Green Flag (Happened twice) and is now in a garage waiting to be repaired.
My town was mentioned on ITV news this evening as having fuel problems..and my town is NEVER mentioned! Could this be related? I'm very angry, but slightly relieved!
Because the car will run at the moment, might it work if I have the petrol taken out and better fuel put in? It's an L reg and I plan to sell it within the next few weeks to move abroad so don't want to spend much on the stupid thing!!

Thanks, I called Sainsbury's this evening and they have told me nothing is wrong with their fuel and that I'm the ONLY one who has called in about it. It was almost like she had been warned to say it!
It makes me feel inadequate, but I will try and fight my case, this repair will cost a lot!

They are completely denying it is their fuel, BIT OF A COINCEDENCE ISN'T IT?
If they won't admit to it and pay my costs, I will sue them. I will contact trading standards and my local citizens advice.

Your best bet is to take your car to your local garage and get a sample of the fuel. Then take it into Sainsburys and they will send it on to be tested for contamination. I can't remember what happens next (as it never happened to me), but I think then you can make a claim. The petrol station staff will inform you of what to do next. Hope this helps at least.

It would be best to get a full report from your garage first so you have something to go on, then if they say the petrol is corrupted in anyway you would have to prove that you bought the fuel at a particular garage. Somewhat of a hastle. There have been occasions where water has seeped into the petrol in garages thus degrading it. It is not just a question of taking the fuel out it would need a complete overhaul, I mean the fuel system, it's like putting diesel fuel in if you don't have a diesel. I certainly would wait for the report from your garage before you do anything...

Contact your local councils trading standards department. They are there to protect you the consumer, not the supermarkets who are making too much profit anyway. I think that if you drain as much of the contaminated fuel as possible then refil using a high octane fuel such as Shell formula 1 it should be ok. Check your reciept, did you put the right stuff in the tank. keep this reciept if you are going to make a claim you will need it. A car of your age should not have sustained too much damage. Sell it quick!

it should be ok as long as the catalyst in the exaust is still good which it should be . fresh fuel should cure it . . they will probably want to sell you a new lamda sensor . you should be able to claim from sainsbury as long as they admit fault .they will probably charge you £200 . for half an hours work . you should ask them for your old fuel back and give or sell it to a mate with an old car .otherwise the garage will get to keep it

I know of three people that have had their cars repaired in this last week alone - they used the Asda garage in Fareham. We use that too but apart from one juddery bit have been ok. The problem seems to develop very quickly. Do you think that this is sabotage. I do

My Wife Filled up her 55 Plate Citoen C3 at Sainsburys Hessle yesterday (Saturday 3rd March). On her way to work this morning (6.30 am) car totally threw in the towel!! Stopped in the middle of the road. Its Sunday now so the difficulty is getting it seen to and towed back to the dealer. Will ring Sainsburys and tell them and also reiterate your problem, lets see them dodge this one.

this happened at the sainsbury's store in hessle, near hull a few weeks ago. the local press ran a story about it and i think a fair few motorists who otherwise, might have put it down to their car being at fault, were able to make a claim.
try to make it known locally as best you can, maybe a letter in your local paper, and see if anybody else has suffered too.

if you filled it at a tesco petrol station they are advising you to take your car to a garage and at the moment they are investigating their petrol to see if it has been contaminated but until the investigation is over their is nothing much you can do about making a claim
