About a month ago, my computer speakers stopped working correctly. They will now only work if a jack is plugged into the sound output. Could this be a hardware issue?

Which jack did you plug them into in the first place?
If you where using a headphone jack then they are limited to around 5o Watts, hence using speakers that are not designed to be plugged into a headphone jack would have damaged the sound card.

If you have a green port sound card always use it.

Make sure the speakers are plugged into the correct connection also make sure that the speakers power supply is plugged in and working and that they are turned on. Some speakers work without power, but they're very quiet.

Make sure that your system isn't set to MUTE or that the output level isn't too low.

Click START> All Programs> Accessories> Entertainment> Volume controls. UnMUTE any output (leave microphone on MUTE or you'll get feedback) and adjust the volume levels up.

Good luck!
