I have it for a decent sized network although it was never setup 'right'. Most of it is intuitive enough, but I'd like to know the 'best' way to set it up. It has found some devices in the network automatically, but most are not added. Since I have no training on this, I'd like to read up on 'recommended' solutions or a step by step setup (with explanations).

Also, there are mentions of a syslog daemon...is there a way to view the syslog messages? I've set my routers and switches to send to the cworks server, but can't seem to find a way to view or analyze the messages.

I assume by "CiscoWorks" you are referring to the LMS< LAN Management Solution piece. I've never actually seen a textbook on this, but I haven't gone looking either. I've used the website though, and it's free and very useful, so here is a link below to all of the install and upgrade guides, most with the step by step instructions you're looking for.

I'm going to concur, I've never seen an actual book on it.

A syslog daemon will allow you to capture and save log messages from your devices (not just Cisco either) even after they scroll off of the local buffer. You REALLY need one. In production we use a unix system with syslogd, but you can get one up and running very quickly using Kiwi syslog, which is actually free. The link is below.
