I think I understand what you're trying to say.
You are probably thinking that Pudge will retire after this season (the last year on his contract).
That is NOT the case. The Tigers have an option for 2008, which I am pretty sure they will pick up. After that I am sure Pudge will re-sign with The Tigers for another few years. Pudge has already said he wants to go a few more years and retire in a Tigers Uniform.
He's only 35, and while that is considered "old" for a catcher, Pudge is in the best shape of his career, and could very easily do 4-5 more years.
As far as Dombrowski goes, he does know what he is doing. Catching is about the only think The Tiger's farm system is short on. I'm sure DD will get something going on when he needs too.
AND PLEASE! BRANDON INGE WILL NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER IN ONE HUNDRED MILLION YEARS CATCH AGAIN.
Anybody who say different doesnt know The Tigers as well as I do.

The Tigers should make sure that Rodriguez is NOT on their team when it's time for him to retire.
In fact, a trade would be a good idea now while he still has some value. He isn't getting any better, and Mike Illitch appears willing to spend some money as Detroit improves.

The Tigers will give him an "I-Rod" day. They need to honor a great catcher and a possible hall of famer. Retire his number and do all the things that go with the retirement of maybe one of the 5 or 6 greatest catchers in baseball history.

Well, barring the above options, the Tigers organization doesn't seem to have much in catcher prospects. It seems their best option is to move Brandon Inge behind the plate.
But, depending how much money the Tigers want to spend to be competitive, they'll likely make a deal to fill the position.
But, anything can happen in a few years. Rodriguez is 35... he still has a few good years ahead of him.

Considering that he's only been there for a couple of years, precisely what everyone else does - grow your own (catcher). Any smart GM (Dave Dombrowski most definitely fits that description) will have a few prospects, a couple of whom will do their final "apprenticeship" directly under Rodriguez, at the major league level.
That goes for all positions and all teams, not just for catchers or the Tigers.

I'd say go out and get another catcher (duh?).....try to bring one up through the farm system first (because those guys come cheaper at first), or see if you can trade someone who's not worth a whole lot for an up-and-coming young catcher
otherwise, yeah, just sign a new one

They should terminate the franchise right now. Don't wait for any one to retire. Just eliminate the Tigers from MLB. I mean, c'mon. What's it been? Twenty-something years since they've won? There should be some limit to losing. Twenty-five years without winning and the franchise should fold and another city with a dream of a World Series champion should get a shot. That's all I have to say about that.

I would advise getting another catcher. Preferably a good one.
