In the early sixties a Welshman named Colin Fletcher hiked down to the Supai Reservation made a right and headed up river via Matkatamimba Canyon Great Thump Mesa and finally picked up the Tonto Trail at Elves Chasm . He stayed on that all the way to the end at Hance Rapids amazing he walked around * Unkar Overlook and then took an air matress across the river and I believe he followed the beach all the way to nankoweap Creek and exited the Canyon via Nankoweap Trail.
* The reason he could do that was because Glen Canyon Dam had just been built, Lake Powell was filling up and the river was at an all time low, level.
Today you would have to use the Escalante Route to go from Hance Rapids to Tanner Delta & go OVER Unkar Overlook
You may have to arrange a ride with a river party to cross the river although I have a feeling that if you cached a shorty wet suit fins and a CO2 life vest somewhere on Tanner Delta you could swim the river. It's 45 degrees and moving at 4 mph But its only around 100' wide at carbon creek if you started up river far enough and allowed for drift you could safely do it.
Anyway back to Mr Fletcher he went on to write a book about his adventures called The Man Who Walked Through Time and he also wrote The Complete Waker and updated it several times.
The Canyon that Fetcher hiked in was a whole lot more wild than the one you will be hiking in, But in many places it's stilll very much a wild place.
Assuming that you want to start at Hoover Dam and end at Glen Canyon Dam you're going to have to hike on at least two and possibly three Indian reservations and get permission to do so and possibly pay a fee. The West is a patchwork of government juristictions and you may need permission from all of them in addition to the tribes. The BLM -Bureau of Land Management The NFS-National Forest
&The NPS- National Park Service.
You will have to set up personal parameters re: how close to the river you need to be in order to fulfill the definition. I would use " as close as is reasonably possible " as the definition.
You will of course need to scout it out
Establish caches and re-supply points
But I do think it is possible.
