Where CAN'T you go? Depending on the season and what you guys are into there are plenty of places. Along the Mendocino Coast right now or soon you could watch the whale's migrating North (I believe) for summer, and Fort Bragg is a great place to take a girlfriend (you'll get major points). If you like to drive take Highway 1 along the coast (I'm assuming you live south) If you want a nice, pretty cheap resort experiance in Lake County for example, Konocti Harbor is a great place. Then you've got the obvious ski resorts that are going full blast right now. As someone else said, Tahoe is always a great choice but a little expensive. I don't know I've traveled a lot, it just depends on what you're intereted in... whether you want a weekend full of action and fun or a slower weekend with no schedule.

There is tons to do in LA. And nice beaches.
S.F. is really a cool place to visit. Lots of great restaurants and history.
Or you could go to Pismo Beach, in the central part of the state. Less people, more quaint. Lots to do and about and hour away from Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Definitely a must see.

southern calif try big bear lake or lake arrowhead. Summer or winter its nice.
