Unfortunately, most cartridges can not be refilled because of a microchip on the cartridge itself.

You are better off just purchasing generic cartridges rather than refilling them.

You do not need to purchase the higher priced Canon brand cartridges. We purchase the off brand Epson cartridges for our printer. I get them for about $7 or $10, plus I do not have worry about the hassle of refilling them.

Despite what some people say.. it does NOT void your warranty to use off brand cartridges. I found an article about this online if you want to read more about this, go to cheapinkcartridges.com and click on the FAQ link.

There are hundreds of sites online to purchase these cartridges.

Most of the new Canons will not accept refilled cartridges. I got rid of my nice big Canon for just that reason. The cartridges were too expensive and the print head too prone to require replacement. You can put the cartridges in and go to Printer Properties and try to print a test page. If it doesn't sense the refilled cartridges, you are probably out of luck with them.

Any time I've used a refill kit or bought refurbished cartridges the level monitors don't work. It is a pain, but I don't know how to get around it.

in the newer canons (printhead and non, #5,8,40,41,42,50,51,52), you cannot reset the cartridges. you will need to get into your software and turn off the ink status monitor in order to print. this means you will not know when they are empty again *unless you watch your printing* for streaks and discolourations.

You need to reset them, it would help if we know what kind of printer. Is the printer new? Go on the manf. website and see if they have any info.

Is it an Epson? Sometimes they just do that. Kind of annoying. Eventually it will settle down.
