I feel I look 100% American, and I speak English (although not perfect) The only thing I could figure is I have native American, Cherokee from both parents, my hair is dark brown and, well I think I look like all the other people I see that are Americans. Go Figure.

I'm over 40, could my looks have taken a deeper darker turn in my old age?

Its a popular question nowadays. Most 'Americans' came from somewhere else, that's why they ask. People like guessing others nationalities.

It's called paranoia.
Your looks are exotic enough that you might be considered to be Hispanic, or Mexican; at least to some people who don't know any better.
All this recent attention to the Hispanics illegally crossing our border has hit the news and made the public more aware of the situation, although it has been going on since at least the 1960s.
You are facing some racial prejudice plain and simple. Since most Americans feel some guilt about how the Native Americans were treated you can shut a lot of them up by proudly saying that you are a Cherokee, and your ancestors have been her a lot longer than theirs.

No biggie just a sign of the times.
I like to ask people that live here as well as people from around the world, where are you from from just to experience their energy and excitement over being in the USA. I also understand that questions are asked to identify dialect.
Good public relations is a key for Americans to be recognized as friendly. Talk to people and you'll find out that after you get past their game face, there is much to discover through questions and answers.

Oh, excuse me.....I didn't know there was an 'American' look!! Considering America is made up of foreigners, there really can't be a type or look to Americans. Everyone came form somewhere...America is the new land remember?? It's always interesting to find out where people ORIGINALLY came from. It's something to be proud of.

I'm American. I was born and raised here. I speak english perfectly. My mom is Mexican and my dad is Syrian. Being American has nothing to do with the way you look. There are Chinese Americans, African Americans, If you were born here or lived here for awhile than you are considered American.

They are probably intending to ask you what your ethnicity is. You can say you are part Caucasian/ part Native American. Your nationality, if born in the USA, is American...so you're right!

People aren't as embarrassed to ask such things. In the past, maybe people just wondered and didn't have the nerve to ask, and they are past that now. You probably just have an ethnic look that can't really be placed, and those couple of folks are just being nosy.

Unless you have a non-American accent when you speak or wear clothes that are "non-American" I can't think of any reason for people to ask you this question.
