Because after the Industrial Revolution, people started believing more in man-made machines than nature. So, clocks are better (in some people's minds) than looking at nature (the sun's position and shadows) to see what "time" it is.

They're trapped into knowing the hour, the minute, the second. The millisecond. Thomas Jefferson had a clock that only showed hours.

That's a little more like it. People are way too focused on being "on time". You're FIVE MINUTES LATE!!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Most people focus on minutes and not on seasons and moon phases and constellations, stuff people used to think of as time moving. It's not always a good idea.

Time got standardized by the railroads so that schedules would run smoothly.
