There is no one answer to that. Different one's will act in different ways. Generally speaking you may see them hiding much more, hugging the bottom, or being unwilling to move from a particular spot in the tank. Just look for an abnormal behavior pattern and that will probably be a signal.

Act Of Giving Birth

A few days before birth they will slow down some, and sit on the bottom more.

They like to hide in caves or under leaves to give birth and are stressed if placed in a new environment.

This stress means that if you use a breeder, they run a greater chance of miscarriage.

Good luck!

I hope you have a "separator" (can't remember the technical name) but you put the female in the top and the fry will roll down the tapered bottom and are safe. There are air holes in the bottom so everybody gets oxygen. The mothers and other adults will eat the babies so you will have to keep them in a different area until they get a little bigger. Have fun!

The way I have always been able to tell when my females are about to give birth is to watch for them to stop eating as much, and hang out at the bottom of the tank. Sometimes they will start to put their nose to the bottow with her tail up.
