Definitely Lance Armstrong. Not only for his amazing accomplishments in his chosen sport after his miraculous ability to battle back from a prognosis that gave him a 20% chance to live, but also his tireless work with his charitable organizations make him an all around "sportsmen" in every aspect of the word.

I think every sports has its great figure. (note to the F1 comment, Senna put F1 on the map and was the greatest) but if you have to chose ONE single sportsman that is to sports what WWII is to world in general, as an impact, it would have to be Pele, of all the great sportsman he would be the one on most lips around the world.

its sports person, and beating cancer is an accolade on its own, and lance armstrong will be remembered for that.
if you are going for the sympathy vote there are many para-olympians that deserve a mention.
but for pure sports ability and doing something special, mohamed ali is your man, and again i stress not the person the sporting achievement.
