What did he do to further the space mission? I see that he retired from NASA in 1964 but that was a few years before the first moon mission -- right?

I'm helping my 2nd grader with her homework. They had to do a report on a famous historical person and she picked John Glenn.

John Glenn never left Earth's orbit. He does hold three records, however:

First American to orbit the Earth (Mercury Atlas 6 aboard "Friendship 7")

Oldest person to go to space (Aged 77 for STS-95 aboard the shuttle Discovery)

Longest time between space flights (36 years, 8 months).
