A nice skirt and shirt. Not prom, but church clothes. Think of a junior high dance--you wouldn't get into a prom dress, but you would dress to impress.

Wear an evening cocktail dress, which is considered glitzy but not overly formal.
Also, I went and spend hundreds at a boutique for a December semi-formal function - but then I saw Macy's had a stunning collection for about 25% of the price I paid - so do go and check-out the Department stores before investing in overly priced boutiques.

Originally Formal meant a long gown and therefore a Semi-Formal was a short dressy gown.
Things have changed. Semi-Formal would probably mean a pretty dress or pant suit that one might wear to go out to a nice restaurant.

A sexy cocktail dress. It is semi formal.... so nothing long!!!!Something feminine below the knee or right at the knee... if you want to show off those legs. If not. go mid - calf... but not ankle length. Semi formal is just a step above formal... so a nice off shoulder dress, maybe with a stylish wrap, and ankle strap shoes.

I would wear a nice party dress. If you hair is brown maybe a nice blue dress. 50's style dresses are nice, too. Also don't forget some cut shoes or some cute pumps. The party dress will make you look like your going to a party but will still make you able to feel comfortable around your friends.

Dress like you are going to a REALLY nice restaurant with the parents of the man you love.
For example: FORMAL for a man would be tuxedo, and SEMI-FORMAL would be very nice suit and tie with nice shiny shoes! :)
You may not wish to wear a "little black dress" but it IS an example of semi-formal.

I would say a pair of really flattering dark shade jeans, and a dressy top. Something with sequins or a pattern. Then maybe a pair of flats or a low heel. Add some pretty silver jeweler and a cute hairdo, and shazaaam! Semi-formal...
