Well, when thinking about the text to the world, you have to think about the connections to WWII. Tolkien fought in the war and he brought (however subconsciously) those experiences with him when he wrote LOTR. There are strong themes of camaraderie and brotherhood, as well. Tolkien firmly believed that good and friendship could conquer the darkness in the world. And it's interesting that he believed this because, as a soldier, he saw true evil and some of the most horrendous acts committed by man. And despite that, he still believed in our innate goodness.
